If you’re looking for a real taste of the chippy, these generously sized cod fillets do the trick. Testers could really pick out the hoppy pale-ale flavour in the batter. Inside, the white flaky fish was impressively moist and the whole thing was perfectly seasoned.

Our runner-up’s fish batter had also been laced with ale, this time from the Black Sheep brewery in North Yorkshire. Although the golden, crisp batter looked impressive, some found the chunky pieces a little soggy.

However, all agreed that the white flaky fish was deliciously meaty.
