ME…. AND MY HOUSEKEEPING!

Good Morning Britain presenter Ranvir Singh on hoarding clothes, cuddling up in front of the TV with her son and the joy of crumpets in bed What has been your biggest extravagance?

With GMB presenter Ranvir Singh

Ranvir lives in London with her mum, her nine-year-old son, Tushaan, and their dog, Shmizzels. How would you describe your home?

It’s quite small, but it’s just enough. It’s a multi-generational maze full of bits and bobs that each of us like, none of which go together. My mum loves to potter around and put random cushions everywhere, which I’ve had to learn to relax about over the years!

How tidy is it?

Growing up, my mum was a clean freak and I’m the opposite. I always felt like she put cleanliness before joy, so I’ve made an effort not to waste my energy tidying things up if my son is in the house. I’d rather be cuddled up watching TV!

What are your kitchen cupboard must-haves?

Marmite and passata;

I use the latter to make a hidden vegetable sauce. Oh, and I do love a crumpet. Crumpets with Marmite in bed; that’s my dream.

Cook for friends or eat out?

My luxury is somebody else cooking for me, having a glass of wine and going home to find the house exactly as it was when I left it.

What do you always have in your fridge?

Lots of cheese. Parmesan, mozzarella, halloumi, Cheddar – we have it all. Eggs, too, because we often make pancakes at the weekend.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Posh crisps. I could honestly sit in a bath full of them, and it would make me very happy.

Who are your dream dinner party guests?

I would have loved to have been able to feed my dad and get his seal of approval. He died when I was nine and I remember how happy he was when food was served.

What is your best time-saving tip?

Get a haircut that can dry without needing to use a hairdryer and still look nice!

Are you a saver or a spender?

I’m more of a spender and, at 43, I need to rethink that! I’m in the process of doing some financial planning to curb the spending. My car. It’s a BMW 7 Series and I don’t need such a luxury car, but I’m making up for the fact that we didn’t have a car growing up and I was always begging for rides from people!

What did your parents teach you?

To respect books and education. They also instilled a strong work ethic in me, which has made me feel like, whatever happens, I’ll always be able to find something to do.

What advice will you hand down?

In all your relationships, make sure you feel listened to. And people have to earn respect. Just because you’re a certain age or have a certain title doesn’t mean you deserve it.

Are you a hoarder or a chucker?

A hoarder. I’m terrible with clothes as my weight goes up and down, and I always think, ‘One day, I’m going to look okay in that again!’

What is your favourite household task?

Changing the sheets because I know I’m then in for a good sleep. I also like ironing because my mind wanders off and, before I know it, I have a basket full of pristine clothes.

What always lifts your mood?

Crumpets with Marmite in bed; that’s my dream

Music. I have a playlist called ‘My happy-making songs’ and Dua Lipa’s Be The One is at the top of it. It reminds me of how capable I felt when I was training for the London Marathon five years ago.

What keeps you awake at night?

Doing breakfast TV! Anticipating the 3am alarm clock gets me every time.

What helps you stay calm?

The Headspace app. I do the three-minute SOS when I’m feeling particularly fraught.

What simple thing sparks joy for you?

Walking the dog. Seeing him leap for joy with his tail up is an indescribable moment of complete gratitude.

What is your favourite home comfort?

My fluffy onesie. Tushaan and I both have them and when one of us says, ‘Shall we put our onesies on today?’, it means: ‘Let’s have a chilled day today’.

What is your health motto?

In almost all cases, sleep is the answer. If I’m overeating or getting cross or upset, I now know it’s because I’m tired.
