The best film you’ve seen…
Well, Half A Sixpence got played a lot in our house, partly on account of the fact that my mother, the actor Julia Foster, is in it. My wife and children would be horrified if I didn’t mention The Sound Of Music, but I’m actually going to nominate
The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The film you could watch over and over… Dumb And Dumber is always a winner and guaranteed to make me laugh.
The performance that made you cry… I was so moved by Captain Fantastic – I cried and cried. I think because it is close to the subject I work around, I saw elements of people I know and even my own life in it.
The one you’d tell everyone to see… Hunt For The Wilderpeople. It’s a funnier
version of Captain Fantastic.
The podcast you loved… My wife Marina has a great podcast called As Good As It Gets?. Another I loved recently was Mayday, and I like Caliphate, too. The last boxset you binged on… Marina and I binge-watched Succession. I can’t tell you how much we loved it.
Top of your must-watch list…
I really enjoy ‘hopepunk’ shows; Detectorists and Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing are favourites, but I also loved This Country.

I like a bit of Caro Emerald.
The one you want to hear…
I’m looking forward to the new album by James. I grew up listening to them.
The book that inspired you…
I love Delia Owens’s Where The Crawdads Sing – it left a lasting impression on me. It’s an instant literary great, without doubt.
The best recommendation you received… The film crew I work with are always giving me advice on what to watch. The best recent suggestion was Last Breath – an extraordinary documentary.
The ticket you want to get your hands on… I’d love to see the show Message In A Bottle by my schoolfriend Kate Prince. Sacred Islands With Ben Fogle is coming soon to the BBC Scotland channel and BBC One Daytime
