FOR A BEACHSIDE BOLTHOLE… The Gallivant & Beach Hut mini spa, Camber Sands

- 

Still one of the Sussex coast’s best-kept secrets, The Gallivant is so very lovely, you’ll be plotting your second visit while still on your first. For the look and feel, think airy beach hut crossed with modern gastropub and cool Californian motel. Bedrooms are beautifully kitted out with subtle nods to the seaside; some have French windows leading into the secluded Coastal Garden, and all are stuffed with books and pictures (spot the framed vintage swimsuits).

The Gallivant’s idea of wellness is a gentle one, with mindful beach walks and morning yoga taught by instructors who are just challenging enough, either in the large studio or on the wild dunes just across the road. Afterwards, a courtyard spilling with greenery serves as an open-air eating place that’s perfect for surfer-style buttermilk pancakes or a seasonal ‘breakfast salad’.

Facials and massages take place in the hotel’s mini spa, tucked into a corner of the garden. When Bamford is the in-house brand, you know that quality control will be on point and that every treatment will have a healing element (GH jumps on the stress-relieving Be Silent Massage wherever we find it; £85 for 55 minutes). Whatever you choose, enjoy listening to the birds as you’re stroked with jade stones or massaged with chamomile and lavender oil – this is as close to an outdoor treatment as you’re likely to find in the UK.

NEED TO KNOW Don’t miss ‘English Wine At 5’ in the plush hotel bar, where there’s an opportunity to try something new, interesting and delicious on the house between 5pm and 6pm every day.

Accommodation from £170 a night; treatments from £85 (thegallivant.co.uk)
