Calcot & Spa, Tetbury

-

Calcot’s jumble of yellow limestone buildings, some dating from as far back as the 1300s, leaves you in no doubt that you’re in the heart of the Cotswolds. Its spacious guest rooms and elegant spa (with fireside hot tub and heated outdoor pool nearby) are dotted among the original farmhouse buildings and stables, all surrounded by pretty, formal planting in a corner of a 220-acre site. It’s this bucolic expanse of land, the focus of a rewilding project for over 20 years, that now provides inspiration for some of Calcot’s newest activities and packages: early-morning bird walks with wildlife expert Ed Drewitt, apiary sessions with the resident beekeeper, and beautiful wildflower meadows, regenerated hedgerows and native woodland to explore on a bike. Even on the short walk from your room to the spa there are halcyon views at every turn, while the double-height glass wall in the spa’s airy reception overlooks a pretty courtyard garden. Upstairs, the treatment rooms and relaxation suite feel private and cosy; from Elemis to Aromatherapy Associates, the most luxurious spa brands are here. Feeling energetic? There are indoor and outdoor pools and gyms, plus exercise classes, so there’s no need to skip your workout.

GOOD TO KNOW Calcot’s ethos is ‘revive, refresh and feel good’, and this is wellness with a focus on indulgence rather than denial. The Brasserie’s menu and wine list hit just the right notes, and sipping cocktails in The Hive draws your day to a blissful end.

 Accommodation, from £299; spa days, from £165 for a half-day; Rewild and Relax package, from £843 for two nights based on two sharing, including bed and breakfast; treatments, from £100 (calcot.co)
