FOR GOLFERS & WALKERS Archerfield House, North Berwick
Time stops at Archerfield, as it should do on all the best spa breaks. It’s a unique set-up: the estate, on the east Lothian coast, is a huge 550 acres and only 45 minutes from busy Edinburgh. There’s a 17th-century mansion house at its heart, a colonial-style clubhouse with restaurant and bar, and accommodation (converted stables, an Edwardian villa, timber lodges…) scattered over the verdant landscape. Vast golf courses attract a smart American clientele, but the rustic-chic Fletcher’s Cottage spa is the other huge draw. The spa experiences really stand out, and space is used in a thoughtful way. You’ll have your own changing room, shower and dedicated seat in the relaxation room, while combined massage and meditation treatments, and three different Bath Hut Experiences, take place in sweet private huts in the spa’s serene walled garden. There’s a holistic element, too, with reiki and reflexology treatments available, and an unusual two-hour Cacao and Gong Bath Workshop taking place every month, for clearing emotional blockages. All treatments come with a 90-minute slot in the Lavender Sauna and the Marine Steam Room, and the relaxation room is the place to sip on a hot drink or a fruit-infused water while enjoying a variety of newspapers, magazines or stress-relieving colouring books.
GOOD TO KNOW Marine Villa, where Robert Louis Stevenson stayed in the 19th Century, looks out to the Isle of Fidra, believed to be the inspiration for Treasure Island!
