PIPPA’S ENGAGEMENT SPARKS THE ‘SPENCER PROBLEM’
THE MIDDLETONS have already welcomed Prince William, Prince Harry, the Queen and, er, Donna Air into their family. Now, they can add another name to the list: Spencer Matthews. Last week, Pippa Middleton confirmed rumours that she is engaged to the Made In Chelsea star’s millionaire older brother, James Matthews, after he proposed in the Lake District last weekend. The relationship began last year shortly after Pippa’s split from her boyfriend of three years, Nico Jackson. The couple have apparently been inseparable ever since, with Pippa moving into James’ £17 million West London home after only six months. Showing off her ring to photographers last week, Pippa, 32, admitted she ‘couldn’t be happier’. As for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? ‘Absolutely delighted’, apparently. But, according to royal sources, the engagement has raised some eyebrows. Certain members of the royal family are said to disapprove of the fact that the future Queen of England’s sister will be related to a reality TV
star like Spencer. The 27-year-old has publicly claimed to have slept with over 1,000 women, admitted using cocaine and LSD and been forced to sensationally quit I’m A Celebrity… last year after revealing he had been using steroids.
‘Everyone is obviously delighted that Pippa has found happiness at last,’ one source told Grazia. ‘But there have been a few mutterings from those who think reality TV and all the scandal that comes with it should not be associated with the royal family.’
Meanwhile, James, 40, is said to be preparing himself for the inevitable attention the wedding will command. Grazia understands he has also been learning royal protocol and etiquette, including how to address members of the royal family.
‘James has been taking it very seriously,’ said a second source, adding: ‘William has been particularly helpful in welcoming him into the family and the Middletons – especially Carole – are all thrilled.
‘It’ll be the biggest wedding since Kate’s.’
