MK does DETROIT

-

American DJ and music producer MK is all about the house music, hitting the top of the charts since back in ’93, he is still relevant and big on the scene today, collab’ing with Becky Hill for the summer banger, Piece Of Me. With his roots in Detroit, he knows the Motor City inside out…

WHERE DO WE GO TO PARTY? TV Lounge at 2548 Grand River Avenue and Paxahau ( paxahau.com) host a lot of the best shows, and put on Movement Festival every year at the end of May. Otherwise, Grasshopper ( thegrasshopperunderground.com) has a lot of really cool shows, too, and Masonic Temple ( themasonic.com) is also a great a venue to visit.

WE NEED TO CHILL – WHERE TO NOW? Down by the waterfront, which is really coming back to life again with beautiful bike and walking paths. There are so many little pockets of Detroit that are really different and beautiful these days. Cool companies like Shinola are helping to transform the city and bringing jobs back in – it is really like watching a rebirth.

YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO EAT? For breakfast, Corktown is a neighbourhood with a load of great cafes and restaurants. Astro ( astrodetroit.com) does the best coffee and baked goods, and has a laid-back atmosphere. Pegasus Taverna in Downtown ( pegasus tavernas.com) does great Greek food.

WHERE DO YOU LOVE TO SHOP? City Bird ( ilovecitybird.com) and Nest ( nestdetroit.com) both have lots of Detroit-made clothing and accessories. Eastern Market ( eastern market.com) is really interesting to check out, as well as Rust Belt Market ( rustbeltmarket.com) – it’s like going on a treasure hunt in there!

WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? All the hipster pockets of Detroit where you see murals and refurbished Victorian homes. You also have the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Motown Museum.

WHERE DO YOU STAY? If I’m doing a show, I like to stay at the MGM Grand Detroit ( mgmgranddetroit.com; from $199/£152 per night).
