IT WAS ONLY THREE years ago that Margot Robbie seamlessly swapped Ramsay Street for Wall Street when she starred alongside Leonardo Dicaprio in her first major film.

The Australian actor has described the transition as being ‘like diving in headfirst… thoroughly overwhelming’. But in the months since, her career has been no less dramatic, with roles in films with Will Smith, Kristin Scott Thomas, Michelle Williams and Tina Fey in the past year alone.

Now, Margot’s star is poised to spin into orbit, as she takes centre stage in this summer’s big blockbuster, Suicide Squad, as well as appearing alongside Alexander Skarsgård in Tarzan. Speculation has already begun that the 26-year-old is to become the next Bond girl.

But if her career trajectory has been remarkable, her private life has so far been anything but.

Last month, it was revealed that, 

until recently, Margot lived in a flatshare with three friends in Clapham, South London. Meanwhile, she’s been quietly dating Tom Ackerley, an estate agent’s son from Surrey, for the last three years. They reportedly moved into a flat together in West London’s Shepherd’s Bush.

Margot has been careful to keep the relationship shrouded in secrecy – with members of Tom’s family seemingly forbidden from speaking about it to outsiders.

Now, Grazia understands that a bizarre riddle has emerged – largely thanks to the actor’s insistence on shielding Tom from the spotlight: that the pair are secretly married.

According to friends, the couple wed in a discreet ceremony in Australia last year, believed to have been attended by only their closest family members.

‘It is well-known within their friendship group that they got married,’ said one well-placed source. ‘People refer to them as husband and wife. Their own friends talk about it to other people. They did it on the down-low abroad, without many people around them.’

The couple met in 2013 when they were both working on the World War II movie Suite Française, for which Tom was an assistant director.

They have since set up their own production company, Luckychap Entertainment, together, and Margot recently revealed that they ensure they see each other every three weeks amid their hectic schedules.

But, despite the insistence of friends close to the couple that Margot and Tom have tied the knot, the pair have so far declined to discuss the rumours.

When Grazia asked Tom about the speculation on the phone last week, he said, ‘Thank you so much for calling, it’s much appreciated, but I have no comment.’ When approached, his mother Nikki’s colleagues added that she ‘had nothing to say on the matter’.

Meanwhile, it is impossible to find any record of the marriage. Unlike in the UK, where marriage certificates can be accessed by members of the public, they are not released in Margot’s home state of Queensland.

The couple first provoked speculation that they had married when they were pictured wearing matching gold bands on their wedding fingers while together in Toronto last June. Three days later, Margot was spotted wearing the ring again. But the following week, she was spotted in London without it. When she returned to Canada some days later, she had put it back on – but on her other hand. She continues to wear the gold band on her right hand.

For his part, Tom has only been seen wearing his ring once, but keen observers have noted that he is often pictured with his left hand in his pocket.

If the rumours are to be believed, why all the secrecy? According to one source, ‘It’s in keeping with everything about them as a couple. They don’t like to court publicity and kept the early days of their relationship quiet. The marriage is characteristic of what they’re like.’

The couple kept their relationship under wraps for several months and have apparently been careful not to join one another on the red carpet.

Indeed, even as Margot attended the Wolf Of Wall Street premiere in 2013, Tom was absent from her side, but uploaded a picture of his ticket on Instagram. One friend commented, ‘Honestly one of the most ironic pics I’ve seen.’

All the signs are there, while Margot has already openly discussed starting a family. And in a recent interview, she said of her relationship with Tom, ‘I knew that I never wanted to be with an actor. I don’t want to be with anyone famous or anyone with a high profile because I don’t cope well with attention on my personal life. I should definitely not date someone famous.’ But she conceded, ‘I keep telling myself not to talk about him because I don’t want him to be mentioned in interviews. But I can’t help it.’

At the time of going to press, Margot’s representatives had not responded to a request for comment. n
