Presenting Rihanna with the Video Vanguard Award,ward, the softest man in rap waxed lyrical about his on/off girlfriend. His four-minute -minute monologue culminated in him announcing, ‘She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old,’ and moving in for a big Hollywood kiss. Only, Riri swerved, directed his lips to somewhere along her jawline (left) and muttered that immortal line – on camera.
The pair were inseparable during the weekend following the awards, so why did she appear so noncommittal on stage? According to one insider, ‘Rihanna was a bit taken aback and quite embarrassed by
Drake’s speech. Her public persona is very chilled. She’s never been one for big public gestures.’ In that case, we’re guessing she didn’t appreciate the billboard that he rented to congratulate her on her win…
The pair certainly have a chequered dating history. They were first linked in 2009, but in 2010 Drake claimed that Rihanna had done ‘exactly what I’ve done to so many women throughout my life, which is show them quality time, then disappear. I was like, wow, this feels terrible.’ By 2014 all was forgiven, and he described her as his ‘ultimate fantasy’. Then, after a few more false starts, they resumed dating this July.
However, according to the friend of the couple, ‘They’re still on different pages when it comes to the relationship. Drake absolutely loves Rihanna and would marry her tomorrow if he could. He’s made his feelings for her pretty clear before, and now he’s done it publicly it’s a real game-changer – but she’s still unsure if she’s ready to settle down. Friends are worried that she’s previously described Drake as ‘like an older brother’. For now, things are going well between them, but those close to Drake are worried that he’ll end up broken-hearted again.’
