Sharp shooting: how the NY FROW nailed this season
How the NY FROW nailed this season
PHIL OH, AKA
Mr Street Peeper (the name of his blog) and the American voguerunway.com’s official street-style photographer, has been capturing the world’s most stylish since 2006 – here are his shots direct from New York Fashion Week. Born and raised in Chicago, he studied history at New York University before taking up his hobby more permanently. ‘It started out mostly as an excuse to travel to Tokyo, Paris and London,’ he says, ‘I never really had much of an interest in fashion but I liked flipping through those Japanese street-style magazines and looking at The Sartorialist and somehow it’s turned into a semi-career!’ His breakthrough moment was his hiring for the launch of vogue.com – ‘It was during Paris Fashion Week, the next morning everyone seemed a lot friendlier to me…’ So, who are the best people to snap? ‘The outré characters who have a
genuine love of the kooky clothes they wear. It makes me happy to be able to shine a little light on the true non-conformists, like Susie Bubble and Michelle Elie.’ Phil says the best thing about his job is the airline points he’s racked up, ‘I also don’t mind the free time when it’s not fashion month.’ And the worst? ‘Maybe all the fake smiles (giving and receiving) during fashion weeks? Er, I probably shouldn’t say that. Or that having a camera permanently slung over my shoulder is making my posture even worse.’ While Phil is all laid-back cool – and as stylish as the fashionistas he’s shooting – it’s his shots that zing with colour and energy that have made him the street style’s fave lensman.
