FIVE MINUTES WITH HILARY RHODA...

-

Are you really the ultimate ‘All-american girl’? I’m like the East Coast All-american girl.

You bear a striking resemblance to Donald Trump’s communications director, are you in fact living a double life as Hope Hicks [below, centre]? I can’t tell you how many text messages I got the day they announced that, saying, ‘Oh my god, I thought this was you, wtf?’ But don’t you think she looks like Bee Shaffer [bottom], Anna Wintour’s daughter?

If you were president, what would you do in your first 100 days? I honestly don’t even know. I mean the political state right now is… I would have to change everything!

What do you think of fashion’s obsession with diversity? It’s brilliant. When I started my career, nobody was talking about it, let alone using diverse castings, and that was a problem. It’s definitely something people need to keep talking about so it’s not just ‘a hot trend’, but a movement that needs to continue.

Should all models be your size? No! It’s about whatever size is healthy for you.

You’re 30 now, how has the modelling world changed since you started, at the age of 15? Oh, my gosh, so much. I remember my first shoot with Steven Meisel, my agents were, like, do not take your phone out the entire day – no phones on set, ever! Like, it was the biggest sign of rudeness. And now it’s part of the deal – you have to do the social media, you have to take the pictures.

What are the best and worst things about modelling? What was the best is now the worst for me: travelling. I just like to be home with my family, my dogs and my routine. The best is being part of the creative process – I’m not the most creative person, I was never good at art and stuff like that, but it’s incredible to work with people that have those minds and that vision.

What does it really take to maintain that body? I do the Tracy Anderson method, two hours every single day, then I do Soulcycle a few times a week for the mind and body – it’s so much fun.

Any great gymwear brands we should know about? Alo Yoga, Outdoor Voices, Koral, Under Armour and I wear Nike men’s basketball shoes – I’ve had so many injuries, they protect my ankles and look much cooler than the women’s options!

OK, what do you really eat? Is it the same as any other human being? Ha! Yeah, ask my husband and he’d say, “Oh my god, she doesn’t stop eating.” But look, I work out so much I can eat pretty freely – pasta, French fries, peanut butter M&MS. That said, I like to put healthy things in my body – lots of salad, avocado toast, feta cheese.

What would your very last meal be? A Bolognese pasta. With Parmesan. Or chilli – I make a really good chilli every winter, a huge batch.

Your top beauty secret? Working out to sweat out the toxins! I stear clear of salty food at night otherwise I’ll wake up with my eyes swollen shut, my face puffy, and I don’t drink too much – like maybe one glass of wine a month.

Gulp. A month? Exactly how big is that glass? Ha ha ha! It’s not that I don’t want to drink, but I don’t bounce back like I used to; I just feel like shit and it’s not worth it.

What’s your brow secret? I never touched them growing up. And I never let anyone touch them now!

Do brunettes have more fun? I do. Greatest modelling achievement?

Being an ambassador for Estée Lauder for over 10 years now – I’ve come a long way since my first Givenchy catwalk show. Who is the love of your life? My husband [top].

At least you didn’t say the dogs! Who was the last person you called on your phone? My husband. Is he saved in your phone as ‘my husband’? No, but I do have this OCD thing where I have to put in everyone’s first and last name. So, he’s ‘Sean Avery’, even my parents are, like, first and last name. No nicknames. What was your last purchase? I bought shoes online from this new brand, Alumnae [pictured top left].

Most sentimental piece in your wardrobe ? My wedding ring. Best new jeans brand? Re/done. Any regrets in the wardrobe department? So many things. Now I know not to buy any super-trendy pieces, like I bought this leopard print bag and it was one of those trendy bags that you can never wear again – big regret.

Who are your three fantasy dinner guests? Oprah, Martha Stewart and Bob Dylan [below].

What’s the last thing you googled? ‘Can dogs eat…’ and it’s whatever I’m eating at the time because the dogs [Chihuahuas, Chloe and Winnie] are usually sat at my feet begging.

Where’s your favourite shoot location, city and beach (in that order)? Oh god, the Seychelles, London, The Hamptons.

Favourite book and TV shows? Any good true crime book, and Making A Murderer on Netflix and Homeland. Your fave filter on Instagram? Clarendon but I turn it down 20%, then I add brightness and contrast. Favourite supermodel? Cindy Crawford.

Which top model gave you the best advice? Lauren Hutton [above, centre]. She said how important it is to live your life outside of work, to travel because of all the new things you see and learn, and how it changes your face, refreshes your look.

So, is there an inner actress waiting to burst on to our screens? Yes, I’ve been taking classes and auditioning and stuff.

If you weren’t a model you’d be an… actress maybe? Yeah!
