WHERE TO STAY CDMX is vast and if you want to be conveniently located for The Frida Kahlo Museum and the Saturday arts market at Plaza San Jacinto then STARA San Angel Inn is a chilled-out boutique with great service and is just a 15-minute drive from both. Book at slh.com/sanangel at £116 per night (two sharing) on a B&B basis. STARA Hamburgo is their boutique sister property with a beautiful rooftop breakfast spot in the centre of downtown, not far from Polanco, Condesa, the food market and all the central museums. Book at slh.com/ hamburgo from £155 per night (two sharing) on a B&B basis.

TAXIS There is a Metro system in CDMX which serves the metropolitan area, but the best way to get around is by taxi. Tourists are not advised to hail taxis from the street for safety reasons, but Uber is very popular and incredibly cheap. For example, our 45-minute ride from downtown to the airport cost £5.80. The average 30-minute ride was about £3.

BEST TIME TO GO Mexico is a huge country and the weather varies by season and region. The optimum time to visit is generally between December and April, when there is virtually no rain. The wet season begins in the south – where CDMX is located – in May and lasts until October, but while rain storms can be frequent and torrential, they tend to take place in the late afternoon and don’t last long.

FLIGHTS British Airways flies direct to Mexico City for about £800 return; ba.com.
