The truth is, depression is complex – caused by a combination of factors, from psychological, genetic, social to biological. Sometimes illness, stress or a traumatic life event can trigger depression. Each person’s experiences vary – and yes, it’s absolutely possible to feel really down without there being an obvious standout reason.
The most important thing is not to suffer in silence. You say you feel guilty about how you feel – this could be a symptom of the depression talking and it’s vital that you don’t isolate yourself because of this. Talking to someone can be a huge relief and make a real difference to how you feel. Notice if there are other clusters of change, such as eating and sleeping more or less than normal, feeling lonely, tearful or irritable, not enjoying things that used to make you happy, feeling hopeless or self-critical – if these changes have been going on every day for two weeks, then it’s time to see your GP.
