Where to hit the beach

- by Alice Tate

From Galle, follow the coast to Weligama, a town in a sheltered bay with powdery golden sands that blur the lines between beach resort and sleepy fishing town (take a taxi – it’s 30 minutes, and about £15). Nab a quiet spot on the sandy sweep of the bay, and if you wander inland a little, you’ll find yourself among lush greenery, rice paddies, buffaloes and monkeys playing. Cape Weligama, a series of grand colonial villas with ocean views, pools and even private butlers is super-luxe. The crescentshaped infinity pool that overlooks the ocean is perfect for sundowners (£353 per night; resplendentceylon.com/ capeweligama). Or try Eraeliya Villas & Gardens (£150 per night; eraeliya.com).
