THE MODERN THROWBACK

Here’s something to make you feel old: The Body Shop’s velvety floral White Musk is 36 years old. Ouch. If you were a fan back in the day, then try its latest incarnation: White Musk Smoky Rose, £13, created by Sophie Labbé (the perfumer behind Givenchy Very Irresistible and Elie Saab Girl of Now). Think blackcurrants with tobacco on that signature musk base.

THE £3.99 CANDLE

Supermarket giant Aldi is selling a pomegranate candle for £3.99 to rival Jo Malone London Pomegranate Noir at £44. Our verdict? Save up for the original as a special treat. Despite the great smell in the Aldi candle’s jar, it doesn’t project beyond a few metres.

‘ I wore an M& S per fume for 24 hours. Here’s what happened…’

It was love at first sniff: Rosie for Autograph Rose Gold, £28, was the snug, pillowy and cloudy musk-floral perfume I had hoped for. Created for M&S Autograph by Rosie Huntington-whiteley with perfumer Ralf Schwieger, it’s the perfume equivalent of a blush-pink cashmere hoodie – all cuddly vanilla and amber with gentle freesia and rose woven through it. Its first outing: a family lunch. ‘You always smell amazing,’ said my aunt as she hugged me hello. Good start. Next, my sister. ‘Yum that’s so nice, what is it?’ ‘It’s Marks and Spencer,’ I announced. I whipped out the bottle and everyone swooned over the delicious scent.

Over coffee with a beauty journalist the next day, I took a new approach – ‘I’m roadtesting the new Rosie for Autograph, what do you think?’ She took a deep breath. ‘It’s a bit sweet,’ she winced. But on the bus home, a stranger asked, ‘Your perfume is really lovely, what is it?’ The look on her face when I told her said it all. ‘You’ve made my day – I’m buying it now!’ and off she went.
