DON’T KEEP MUM I felt like Alix in ‘I don’t need fellow mum friends’ (4 Dec). But after a traumatic labour, endless sleepless nights and recurrent mastitis, I found myself isolated and depressed. All my childless friends were at work and unable to chat during the lonely daytime hours. I did try, but found they only wanted me to say positive things about motherhood and responded with, ‘I’m sure it’s all worth it.’ After six months, I set out on the daunting task of creating a daily schedule of groups and events to get out of the house. I found it such a healing balm to be able to speak openly about how exhausted and low I often felt. I said the same as Alix. But there are some things you can’t share with friends without children. It isn’t black and white – some existing friends are as awesome as ever and you ditch some initial mum friends, but during the sleep-deprived early days, mum friends are physically and emotionally there for you. Surely all friendships are a product of some fluke (living in the same area, working together…). Why are some more valid reasons than others? Name withheld
