GIVE WINTER THE SLIP
TEMPERATURES may have dipped below double digits recently, but that hasn’t stopped a surge of interest in one of summer’s slinkiest silhouettes: the slip. According to fashion search platform Lyst, searches have soared by 41% in the last six weeks.
But hang on a sec. Surely the slip, that barely there wisp of a dress (a literal slip of a thing) championed by Kate and Naomi in the ’90s, is made for warmer climes and bedrooms? Not necessarily. Layer it right and you have one of the hardest workers in your wardrobe. To give it a winter 2019 stamp, take one of Raey’s or Joseph’s muted silk slip dresses, layer it over a mesh top – like those by Molly Goddard – or under an XXXL chunky knit, and add a pair of heavy boots (Grenson’s or Proenza Schouler’s, ideally).
Another example of sleepwear moving from the sheets to the streets (see also: Sleeper’s feather-trimmed PJS and Olivia Von Halle’s silk blouses), the slip also possesses the ability to transition from desk to dinner without fuss – simply switch chunky walking boots for sleek knee-highs (Uterqüe has good options) and add a padded hairband from Prada (or Accessorize, depending on your budget) when the occasion calls.
Spotted on the spring catwalks of Alberta Ferretti, Alexa Chung, Balenciaga, Burberry, Coach and Stella Mccartney, it’s fair to say the slip will retain relevancy way into the summer months. If – sorry, when – the weather warms, simply wear with flip-flops and swap a sweater for a trench.
All in all, not a bad way to slip stylishly through the cold months.
