A record number of single women are starting families on their own with the help of IVF, it emerged last week. In fact, the number has almost quadrupled in a decade, with some blaming the struggle to find ‘Mr Right’. But those reports (and the suggestion that women are just too picky) obscured a bigger story: record numbers of same-sex couples and those using surrogates are also becoming parents via IVF, which was initially aimed at heterosexual couples. Increasingly, the world is realising that families can come in all shapes and sizes. And if more people are able to have the children they so desperately want, surely that is something to celebrate.
