– Getting married the Jophie way

- WORDS JANE MULKERRINS

A multi-destination European hen party involving wigs, a private jet and a giant order of Mcdonald’s; a stag weekend in Ibiza that prompted the police to be called three times; a surprise first (legal) Las Vegas wedding; and now the main event, a star-studded wedding celebration in France. It’s official: actress Sophie Turner and singer Joe Jonas are the Hollywood couple we are all most desperate to be friends with.

As Grazia went to press, the wedding party was still gearing up at the Château de Tourreau, an impressive 17th-century property in Sarrians. Surrounded by lavender fields and complete with a pool and tennis court, it’s a perfect location for the festivities. It followed a spell in Paris, the city of romance, during which the pair danced aboard boats on the Seine with friends and family, including Joe’s bandmate and brother, Nick, and his actor wife Priyanka Chopra, and took a series of impossibly cute city selfies, including them sharing a kiss in front of the Eiffel Tower.

One thing we can be confident of is that those who flew in for the big day, including Sophie’s Game Of Thrones co-star and maid

of honour, Maisie Williams, will have had a guaranteed good time – Sophie, 23, and Joe, 29, know how to throw a party.

I met Sophie earlier this summer, just a week after the couple tied the knot at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Vegas. ‘I don’t remember much of the night, so I think I had fun,’ Sophie laughed. ‘Too many shots.’ That ceremony, she told me, was supposed to have been a secret. ‘But it’s tricky when people livestream it.’ Diplo, who they booked to be their wedding DJ, livestreamed the ceremony to Instagram.

And the party hasn’t stopped since. Joe held his stag weekend in Ibiza, at which, his brother has claimed, the police were called three times on their first night. Sophie, meanwhile, gathered a gaggle of girlfriends, charted a private jet and took her hen celebrations to Benidorm, Berlin and Prague, in a series of wigs, with in-flight champagne and Mcdonald’s.

But it isn’t just their party spirit that’s made us all fall in love with the pair. It’s also their devotion to one another. ‘He’s the male version of me,’ Sophie told me in May. ‘Marriage was just not something that I was interested in. I wanted to be a free bird. Then you just meet the right one and you’re like, “Ah, never mind. F*** all of that, I want to get married. I’m good with the rest of my life being with this person.”’

The pair started dating after Joe slid into Sophie’s DMS in December 2016, and, since their engagement in October 2017, have been inseparable. ‘They do everything together – Joe especially never wants to leave her side,’ says a source close to the couple. But it’s not all matching Nicolas Ghesquière outfits at the Met Gala; just a few months into their relationship, Sophie took Joe on a night out in her native Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, where they visited a bar in a local shopping centre, indicative of their grounded approach to life. ‘He’s quite shy and she’s gregarious and they bring out the best in each other. They don’t take life too seriously and are always laughing together,’ says the source.

But, while she’s outgoing and fun-loving, Sophie has also been open about her mental health challenges, speaking candidly of her anxiety and depression, and her struggle to deal with vicious trolling on social media. Joe, says another source, has been her rock. ‘When Sophie feels insecure, or has had health difficulties, Joe is there to reassure her and is so supportive when it comes to her career. She’s coming up to a quiet spell work-wise [following the end of Game Of Thrones], which can be daunting, but having him there means that she’s just excited to have a break.’ And that support goes both ways, says the source. ‘Sophie’s the same: he was pretty scared to reunite with the boys [after six years as solo artists] because he just didn’t know if it would be a success, but she has been encouraging and kind every step of the way.’

All hail ‘Jophie’, setting us the very highest of relationship goals.
