Create a home office

-

WITH REMOTE working on the increase and more of us chasing a side hustle (not to mention keeping on top of life admin), the office is now a key space in the home. So if you’ve come back from holiday determined to create an area dedicated to work, rather than just sitting at the kitchen table or on the sofa, here’s how. An effective office looks stylish, so it inspires you, is comfortable, so you don’t end up with aches, and helps you be efficient by having all you need within reach. SPACE FOR YOU

A spare room gives you privacy and quiet, but if a room of your own isn’t possible, use redundant space such as a corner of a room, within an alcove or under the stairs. If your home office is part of a larger room, choose furniture and accessories that work with the decor so they don’t jar and ruin the mood of the room.

HOT DESKING

Choose a desk that is large enough to hold your laptop or computer and also gives you space to write or take notes. Drawers are useful for keeping clutter down. For a tight space, a compact shelf desk works brilliantly (see Jones ladder desk, £199, marksandspencer.com). West Elm’s Ladder Shelf System combines a desk with up to 12 shelves (from £299; westelm.co.uk) so you can incorporate your home office into a wall of shelving.

SITTING PRETTY

If you’re seated at a desk all day, then you need an ergonomic office chair – make it look more attractive with a throw and cushions. Or, if you don’t need to sit down all the time, choose a chair that fits in with your existing decor.

GUIDING LIGHT Control the amount of daylight and avoid glare with blinds or shutters. A table lamp will work as a desk light if you want a less formal style. And use LED bulbs to alleviate eye strain.

STORAGE STYLE Avoid a cluttered space by adding plenty of storage. If space is limited, opt for wall-mounted shelving such as the String pocket system (£126, johnlewis.com).

GREEN AND CLEAN Bring a bit of nature inside with flowers or house plants; the latter help keep the air in the room fresh and clean.
