The curse of going public for Katie and Jamie

-

BY HOLLYWOOD’S whirlwind standards, having been quietly together for six years, Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx had become quite the long-standing couple. It was surprising, then, that they ended their relationship last week – especially as the move came just three months after they had made their first-ever red-carpet appearance together during the Met Gala in May.

Back then they were, by all accounts, happier than ever. Jamie’s daughter Corinne, 25, told People, ‘They are wonderful.’

So, what’s changed in just three months? Grazia’s source says that going public put their discreet, long-distance relationship (he lives in LA while she is in New York) under unprecedented pressure.

‘Jamie isn’t the most forthcoming when it comes to commitment,’ says the source. ‘The sudden attention on their relationship, coupled with engagement rumours, actually pushed him away from Katie rather than cementing it.’

It was in 2013 that the pair were first linked romantically, but they managed to get through two years without being photographed together

(no mean feat when you’re famous). Indeed, it wasn’t until 2015 that a US mag confirmed their relationship after they were snapped for the first time, and their first ‘PDA’ wasn’t until 2017 when they were seen holding hands on a beach in Malibu.

This quiet romance was a million miles from the very public relationship Katie had gone through with her ex Tom – one of the most documented marriages and divorces in Hollywood history. And, initially, that’s said to be why it worked for Katie. However, earlier this year, it had seemed the pair were ready to take their relationship to the next level. ‘After a couple of low-key break-ups over the years, they had agreed to be exclusive. When they went public at the Met Gala, Katie thought Jamie was in it for the long haul,’ says a source close to the couple. ‘They’d talked about getting engaged and were living together when they were in the same city.

But Jamie just didn’t want to commit any further.’ Jamie was certainly acting like a single man last week when he left a Hollywood club hand in hand with singer Sela Vave, 21. While Foxx denies they’re dating and says the relationship is ‘professional’, Sela is said to be staying with Jamie who is ‘mentoring’ her.

The pair had previously been spotted at a benefit in The Hamptons, at Leonardo Dicaprio’s house for 4 July and on a day out at Disneyland California. Sela also recently posted a pic of herself with Jamie captioned, ‘I am so grateful to this man!’

Katie is said to be philosophical about the split. ‘She’s upset but has concluded it is probably in their best interests. She felt they were treading water,’ says our insider.

But their break-up isn’t without complications. Jamie had become a big part of Katie’s daughter Suri’s life, while Katie is close to his daughters Corinne and Anelise. ‘They had become like family. But now Katie will be based in NY with Suri, and Jamie is starting a single life in LA.’

Meanwhile, Katie is looking to her future. ‘She was only single for a year after divorcing Tom [Cruise] before dating Jamie,’ says the source. ‘She’s in a different place now, and is content being independent.’
