WHY WE’RE STILL DRESSING LIKE THE FRIENDS GIRLS TOO
Maybe their jobs are a joke and they’re broke but, all things considered, they had damn good wardrobes. It’s 25 years since Rachel burst through the doors of Central Perk in that soggy bridal gown and veil in the pilot episode. Monica, Rachel and Phoebe quickly went on to become the ’90s version of influencers. Every woman wanted the Rachel haircut – that layered, choppy lob that Jennifer Aniston herself grew to hate – and the effortlessness of their clothes was equally tantalising to viewers.
They were also key to the comedy. Who could forget the fandango with Ross’s leather trousers? Or the unfortunate moment where Rachel gets caught on her boyfriend’s parents’ couch in a lace negligee? Ouch.
Cut to today and given the ’90s is fashion’s current mood, it seems Friends is a bit of a blueprint for how you should dress now to look, well, now. Here are the seven key pieces to shop-now-slash-dig-out of your wardrobes from the first time around.
1. The scrunchie
Carrie Bradshaw might have scorned them in the noughties, but the scrunchie, worn in a low ponytail by Phoebe, was fair game in
Friends land. Ganni’s selection is worthy of an, ‘Oh. My. God.’
2. The check
Checks of all shapes and sizes got a showing on the autumn catwalks, but sometimes a simple tartan, like Rachel’s, is best. 3. The straight-leg jean
Retire your skinny jeans immediately, if not sooner, for a straight-legged style favoured by Rachel and Ross.
4. The minimalist slip
It took several hours, and Ross offering to drink a glass of fat, to get Rachel into this dream in minimalist mint green, but boy was it worth the wait.
5. The dress-over-polo-neck Now it (almost) feels like autumn, we’re thinking about the one where Phoebe wears a black slip dress over a white polo neck. Could there be a better way to layer?
6. The flip-flop Flip-flops, like Rachel’s platform pair, are this season’s power accessory of choice, thanks to The Row and Tibi’s elevated versions.
7. The shift + sheer tights
It’s by no means ideal to have to refrigerate your behind, but doesn’t Monica’s nipped-in shift and sheer tights combo spell ‘fabulous’?
