Create your home office

working from home for the foreseeable? here are some easy fixes to help you create a space that’s as inviting as it is safe and efficient

- WORDS RACHEL LOOS

wfh is the new acronym on everyone’s lips, but creating a good working space requires more than just sitting on the sofa with a laptop and a latte.

Offices have ergonomic desks and chairs to help you sit in a way that minimises strain on your body. Now that we are at home and many of us don’t know when we’ll next be working in an office, it’s vital we take steps to look after ourselves.

A table and chair are key for good posture. You also need enough storage, so everything you need is within easy reach. A space that is inspiring will help you work better, so don’t forget decorative touches.

If you’re doing conference calls, it’s not just how you look that matters – keep your workspace professional so people aren’t distracted by the backdrop. Get rid of clutter and hanging laundry. Or move and sit in front of a bookcase or wall.

Finally, however lovely your home office, ‘It’s very important to take regular breaks,’ says Ash James, spokesperson for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. ‘An office gives us lots of opportunities to get up and move and it can be harder to get that incidental activity working from home, so consciously build it into your day. Get up regularly and change your position.’
