HOW TO BE A GOOD ALLY

- BY MAYA RICHARD-CRAVEN

GIVE SUPPORT

Black people are scared and need support. Do this by caring about what is happening: challenge racism when you hear it; head to a protest or join one online. Make signs and say the names of all those Black people who’ve died, not only George Floyd.

EDUCATE YOURSELF

Read They Can’t Kill Us All by CNN’S Wesley Lowery and the essays of The New Yorker’s Jelani Cobb. Follow black news sites like Huffpost Black Voices and Complex. Read classic Black authors, such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison and Zora Neale Hurston.

LISTEN TO BLACK PEOPLE

Engage in dialogue surrounding George Floyd’s death. Listen to your friends’ responses. Take in what they are feeling without commentary. If you protest, listen to people of colour when they take the stage. If you are handed a microphone, pass it to a person of colour. Black people are grieving and want to voice their sadness. Most vitally, know that all Black people want is to be supported.
