We need to talk about… money

Over half of women have never invested, but your savings (even small amounts!) could earn you money – and support sustainable businesses

-

‘MANY WOMEN are put off the stock market as it can seem like a scary place to put your money and there’s a misconception that you need a lot of cash to invest,’ says Lucinda Gregory, investment research and guidance manager at The Share Centre, one of the UK’S leading stockbrokers. According to the latest research from Yougov Omnibus, more than half of British women have never owned any investments, citing a lack of confidence in how to go about it. But investing doesn’t have to be scary or complicated and ethical investing – for example, in companies dedicated to combating climate change – can mean your savings are even helping to effect positive change in the world. So, how do you go about it? ‘First, make sure you keep your emergency savings and investing pots separate, as you don’t want to have to pull an investment because you need money,’ advises Gregory. ‘Second, try investing little and often, we’re talking maybe £50 in a monthly direct debit. Third, consider using a platform where experts do the research for you to save time. Fourth, make sure the company you’re investing in has a good record on sustainability and doesn’t just “talk the talk”. Finally, set your goals and invest appropriately. You may feel more comfortable taking risks if you’re investing long-term for your kids, for example.’ Ready to take the next step? Visit share.com for more information.
