RUNNING 2020 STYLE
THE STATS
From March, trainer sales have gone through the roof – Sports Direct sold 218% more running trainers online than it did in the same period last year, and we’re buying 243% more running clothing and 268% more running accessories. We’ve been downloading apps as well – Strava usage has more than tripled while Runkeeper, the tracking app for ASICS, has seen a 667% rise in registrations.
THE KIT
The beauty of running is that any old workout gear will do as long as you have the right shoes, socks and – for some of us – bra. First, shoes: these need to be trainers with proper cushioning to withstand the impact of hard pavements and with enough room at the front to wiggle your toes. They should also be replaced every 500-800km as the shockabsorbing foam wears out. The right socks are important, too, if you’re going to get serious – look for specialised socks with padding. As for a good bra, comfort and support are key. A racer-back will help it stay in place, while mesh panels will keep you cooler. Brands to look out for include Shock Absorber and Runderwear.
THE APPS
As thousands of runners will attest, this can help keep you motivated as well as being a handy tracker for just how well you are progressing. Couch To 5K, developed by Public Health England, is a nine-week programme starting with brisk walking to 30-minute runs and works for almost anyone, whatever your ability. Strava is popular, too – it’s a tracking app and social network for runners to cheer each other on.
