As we think about fresh starts, let’s do it like a Dane
Despite, well, 2020, The Happiness Museum recently opened in Copenhagen. Danish psychologist Marie Helweglarsen says the nation’s concept of ‘pyt’ could be behind the country’s high levels of happiness. Pyt roughly means ‘stuff happens’ or ‘oh well’; it’s about accepting a situation is out of your control and dealing with stress by thinking healthy thoughts. It’s safe to say this year hasn’t gone to plan, but letting go of the things we can’t change might be the way to survive winter. So, as autumn rolls around and we think about fresh starts, perhaps it’s worth giving the concept of pyt a chance – because the Danes usually have the answer.
