Move over Mossy: north London has a new set
IN THE ’90 S , north London was synonymous with a certain type of celebrity: the Primrose Hill Set. Kate Moss, Sadie Frost, Jude Law. The Gallaghers. They were defined by anarchic cool and deep friendships built on fabled Bacchanalian binges. But now, a new generation of stars have placed new roots. In recent years, Primrose Hill, Hampstead and Highgate have become home to many a young A-lister with a different style to their predecessors. ‘This new set is way more low-key,’ explains a source. ‘The Primrose Hill set of old were practically nocturnal: the new faces are up with the sun for dog-walking or wild swimming. It’s a generational shift.’ So, who’s who in this new north London set?
EMMA CORRIN
Since The Crown made her an overnight sensation, Emma has regularly been spotted out and about in her Highgate locale, on solo runs, or on walks with her cockapoo, Spencer. Emma lives with three friends, none of whom are actors, ‘It keeps you grounded,’ she has said. ‘I never want to get lost in [fame].’
PHOEBE DYNEVOR
The Bridgerton star announced her arrival in Hampstead on Instagram in 2019, posting picturesque images of her ‘new ends’, walks on the Heath, and beloved local, The Flask. That said, when restrictions allow, she also returns to Manchester, where her family – including Corrie star mum Sally – are based.
LILY JAMES
Lily and her ex, actor Matt Smith, used to love a walk through Primrose Hill village. Now, Lily’s more likely to be seen on a picnic on the hill with friends Billie Piper and Gemma Chan, or at Lemonia, the local Greek restaurant also frequented by Emma Watson. ‘Lily likes a party as much as the next person, but in private she’s all about cosy dinners with pals,’ says a friend.
HARRY STYLES
The Gucci-loving singer has bought three properties in the area, giving him easy access to the green spaces. ‘He can take some time for himself without being recognised,’ says a source. Indeed, last year’s Vogue interview was held at Hampstead’s men’s ponds: Harry loves a wild swim.
TAYLOR SWIFT AND JOE ALWYN
Grammy winner Taylor recently purchased a £7 million townhouse in Primrose Hill and has moved in with her long-term boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn. Taylor’s love affair with the city – and Joe – has already been immortalised in her music. Her 2019 song London Boy is an ode to Camden Market and meeting Joe’s Highgate mates.
