AJLT, they put the fun in fashion OLD FRIENDS RETURN

-

In the And Just Like That… universe, post-pandemic Manhattan is a sweatpant-free zone. And thank the fashion gods (or, you know, costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago) for that. The wardrobes of Carrie et al have never been rooted in reality, rather they are a celebration of the joy that fashion can be to both wear and watch. The heels are high, the price tags higher! The SATC wardrobes were always going to be a hard act to follow, and the glut of pap shots prior to AJLT’S release drew mixed reactions, while a certain Forever 21 dress was just outright trolled.

But now we’ve seen the new looks brought to life, they do work. There are nods to how the women have evolved (Carrie’s fondness for tailored blazers, Miranda’s more bohemian look), but it remains true to the original sartorial spirit. Definitive proof that neither age, nor Covid-19, and definitely no off-screen drama can dim Carrie’s credentials as one of the small screen’s most loved style stars came when she wore a flouncy white maxi tutu, spiky Chanel ankle boots and a familiar Fendi Baguette to go – where else? – the bodega. Pre-coffee. An homage to a classic Carrie look and gloriously man-repelling, this was the comfort dressing we were really craving from the reboot: brilliantly bonkers escapism, when we need it most.

SPECS IN THE CITY

Justice for Samantha! They might have scoffed when she whipped out a pair of glasses in season six of SATC – but now Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte are all in statement frames. The message: middleaged but fabulous.

A HEAD START

Carrie + hats: it’s complicated (see: the infamous bird fascinator, Berger’s ‘nice hat’ burn). Still, the heart wants what the heart wants, and for her that means jaunty, jolly, ginormous headgear. Great for Zoom (when they can fit on the screen).

HEELS STILL RULE

Everyone needs a Charlotte, willing to lob a desperate diss at a (possible) love rival. But her attempt at a Natasha dig – ‘She’s wearing flats!’ – fell, well, flat. She was, and looking breezily elegant in them. Still, only a hip operation could (reluctantly, temporarily) get Carrie out of her heels. And why bother? As she tells Miranda of her Terry de Havilland disco platforms, ‘These are my sneakers!’

HRH LTW

She’s the Park Avenue documentarian, art collector and chip-lover who Charlotte is desperate to make her BFF. A fondness for sculptural silhouettes, loud colours and huuuge accessories that take serious core strength to pull off also mark Lisa Todd Wexley as AJLT’S most exciting new style star. Not all Sex And The City sequels are shaky. Welcome back to the sequinned Fendi Baguette, the Manolo Blahnik Hangisi wedding shoes, the ‘Roger’ studded belt and even the Carrie name necklace. The cameos we didn’t so much want, as need.

I ❤ NY

It was often said that New York was the fifth lead in SATC. But just in case you missed the memo, Carrie’s wardrobe is on hand, featuring NYC tributes, from a New York state necklace by Helen Ficalora to a ‘New York or Nowhere’ cloth tote.
