Another month in slippers?

We’ll take that

-

WHETHER OR NOT it’s ever OK to wear your pyjamas in public remains one of fashion’s most Marmite issues. For some, it signals sartorial defeat; for others, life’s too short for outfit changes. Regardless, according to Lyst, searches for sleepwear have increased 29% since December.

And don’t we all feel the desire to hit the snooze button on 2022? Alas, since staying under the covers until April is probably not an option, and getting dressed (properly) is therefore a necessity, we must seek a middle ground. The good news is, we’ve found it.

Indoor/outdoor slippers are having a moment. An elevated evolution of the Crocs and Birkenstocks we’ve all become attached to during lockdowns, these are not the novelty slippers you were given as a misjudged Secret Santa present but luxuriously louche styles that are far too good to keep confined to the bedroom. They’re effortless enough for the home and elevated enough to wear outside of it (weather permitting).

Consider Jonah Hill and his partner Sarah Brady at the premiere of Don’t Look Up (below left). In matching powder blue Gucci suits they did the impossible and proved that couples dressing alike can actually look very, very cool. To finish their laid-back-yet-luxe look? Jacquard Manolo Blahnik mules, which added an irresistible dash of dapperness to the proceedings.

Also in LA (naturally, California is the spiritual home of athleisure): Olivia Wilde (above) running errands in a pair of fuzzy shearling slip-ons. Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner loves The North Face’s puffy, padded Thermoball mules, and Gigi Hadid has happily swapped heels for Ugg Tazz slippers.

When it comes to luxury loungewear, you cannot beat Charvet, the Parisian shirtmaker founded in 1838 that has been worn by literally every forever style icon (think JFK and Jane Birkin, Fran Lebowitz and David Hockney). Unsurprisingly, its suede mules with cloud-like cushioned soles are the definitive indoor/outdoor slippers. You might wince at the £325 price tag, but just think about cost-per-wear (reminder: you’ll wear them everywhere). Besides, being able to walk in 2022 in style and comfort is surely worth getting out of bed for?
