Designed by women for women, new hi-tech sports bras by adidas will maximise your performance – and breast health
WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE . You decide to up your fitness regime, or try a new sport, only to find your sports bra either doesn’t provide the right support or is so uncomfortable it’s an unwelcome distraction. In fact, 50% of women say bra failure or discomfort puts them off doing exercise.
That’s something adidas is determined to put right in its mission to make exercise accessible to all. Its extensive new sports bra collection – three years in the making – uses the latest materials and design innovations informed by independent breast biometrics research.
An all-female team of designers, testers and experts have created a 43-strong collection that’s fully inclusive for women of all shapes and sizes and caters to every type of exercise. The Everyday bras are designed for gentle movement, Studio bras for yoga, Pilates and other low-to-mid intensity activity, Train bras provide enhanced support for HIIT classes and intense training, while Run bras offer the highest level of support.
Professor Joanna Wakefield-scurr, head of the Research Group in Breast Health at the University of Portsmouth, who partnered with adidas to help create the collection, explains, ‘Unknown to many, athletes may require the same amount of breast support during power walking as they do during sprinting, and a lack of support has the potential to cause irreversible damage.’
In fact, the impact of wearing the wrong sports bra (and 90% of women are still wearing the wrong size) is staggering. When running, unsupported breasts experience the same G-force as an F1 driver. And if you run a marathon, unsupported breasts will travel an extra four miles on their own. As well as being painful, this can lead to tissue damage. But now, thanks to adidas, every woman can find the perfect fit, with excellence designed in.
