PJS for day? We’re sold!

-

IF YOU’D QUITE LIKE to head out of the house in your pyjamas without being considered slovenly (not just to the bins, you understand, but further afield), you’re in luck. This spring, striped PJ trousers have officially graduated from the bedroom and, unlike last year’s trend for boxer shorts, which might feel a little bit too much like part of an anxiety dream instead of a realistic style proposition, they couldn’t be easier to pull off.

First out of the gate are influencers Monikh Dale, who’s been wearing a pair of micro-striped pants from Leset, and Jessie Bush, whose blue-and-white bottoms are from Skall Studio. To clarify, neither is technically nightwear, but they both share the same DNA as a classic pair of PJS – cotton fabric, a stripe running from top to toe and, best of all, an elasticated waistband. Another brand to note is Deiji Studios. Based in Byron Bay, it’s all about loungewear that blends sleepwear and ready-to-wear, with a range of oh-so-effortless trousers, including pyjama checks, made from linen or organic cotton-poplin.

Bush’s PJ trousers have fast become a staple. ‘I got them in Copenhagen last summer and they’ve since become a comfy go-to, especially when travelling.’ Imagine the bliss of pyjama trousers on a plane (or a packed commuter train, come to think of it) compared to suit trousers, jeans or even leggings. ‘I’ve been wearing them with a fitted white tee and cardigan,’ she says. ‘It doesn’t faze me that they’re Pj-esque, and it’s nice to give my denim a break.’

Wherever you’re headed, the styling is crucial. A matching shirt is probably fair game for brunch with the girls but, for anything else, Bush’s suggestion of a cardigan is a safer bet, especially if paired with a dressier shoe like ballet flats or slingbacks. For high summer, Dale’s longline tunicstyle top with a cord pendant necklace is a very chic shout. And what about work? While super-comfortable in the most uncomfortable office chair, they might send the wrong message in a corporate office (something along the lines of sleepwalking through your professional life, perhaps). But for every occasion outside the 9-5, it’s goodbye jeans, hello stretch-waist comfort.
