Apply for that job, even if you’re underqualified

I’ve always had an ‘embracing the plot twist’ attitude towards new opportunities – after all, nothing ventured, nothing gained. But in a world where job descriptions often feel like unattainable wish lists, it’s easy to feel hesitant about applying for roles where you don’t meet every requirement.

But you should always consider applying for jobs you’re probably underqualified for. Research shows that while men go for jobs when they meet about 60% of the qualifications listed, women tend to apply only if they meet 100%.

How to close that gap? First, adopt a growth mindset. When applying for a job, believe in your potential to learn and grow. Focus on what you bring to the table and how you can bridge any skills gaps through learning.

Second, highlight your transferable skills. Even if you don’t meet every requirement, emphasise your strong communication, problem-solving and collaborative abilities. Show how past experiences have prepared you for success in the role. Demonstrating adaptability and a willingness to learn can outweigh specific qualifications.

Finally, seek feedback. Don’t navigate the journey alone – find mentors who can offer guidance and support. Constructive criticism helps you identify areas for improvement and chart your growth trajectory. Don’t let self-doubt hold you back.
