MAKING A MONSTER

- By Claire Amber Young claire.young@newsquest.co.uk

BLOOD, guts and gore took centre stage at Port Glasgow High School as pupils tried their hand at special effects makeup.

Teacher Tina Harper led National 5 drama pupils through a range of techniques to create an array of authentic-looking gruesome injuries which would be right at home in a Hollywood blockbuster.

Special effects make-up is part of the drama curriculum and Tina says the pupils are really enjoying learning about them.

Tina taught herself the art of special effects makeup and says the pupils are always eager to try out the most gory designs.

She said: “I love it and I hope I pass that enthusiasm onto the pupils.

“It’s a really creative process and is a very practical, interactive learning experience for them.

“The pupils are always up for putting everything I’ve shown them into practice.”

The pupils worked with ‘scar wax’, made with flour and Vaseline, spirit gum, blood spray, congealed blood and face paints.

They will face questions on ageing, special effects, natural and stage make-up in their exams, so it’s important the can use all the correct terminology.

Some of the young students are taking such a,strong interest in the art that it could become their profession.

Tina added: “A pupil has already mentioned that she would love to do it as a career.

“Learning about the make-up creates different career development opportunities and avenues to explore.”

Pupil James Kelly added: “It’s been great to get to do something really hands on.

“I didn’t think I would be able to do it at first but watching Miss Harper really helped.

“It’s great to be able to use my imagination and is really fun to be involved in.”
