MORTON defensive rock Jack Baird is adamant his side won’t get carried away with the heady heights of their league position as they look to stretch their unbeaten run to eight games.

Ton travel to the Balmoral Stadium this weekend to face Cove Rangers and while the central defender admits they will go there full of belief, he says the squad are determined to keep their feet on the ground.

While the Greenock men sit second and Cove are eighth, Baird is paying no attention to the gap between the two clubs and insists he and his teammates will be fully prepared for a tough encounter this weekend against opponents with an experienced squad and strong home record.

He told the Tele: “The boys are confident, but we know this is going to be a difficult game. “In this league you are only ever a couple of bad results away from being right back where you started, so we will never underestimate anybody.

“Everybody can beat anyone in this league, that is what is so good about it - it is so unpredictable.

“We will go there confident but only because of the run that we are on, nothing other than that.

“Cove Rangers are a good side with good players.”

The two teams haven’t faced each other since August, with Dougie Imrie’s men coming out on top that day in a narrow 1-0 victory.

Baird, 26, says it has not escaped his attention that Jim McIntyre’s outfit have only lost twice at home in the league so far in their maiden Championship campaign.

He said: “Their home form is really good, they give very little away.

“I watched them a couple of weeks ago against Queen’s Park on the TV and they were clinical the way they went about things that night.

“It is not an easy place to go as it is quite a long journey, so we are not getting too carried away with ourselves.

“It would be nice to keep our unbeaten run going but we are just working hard this week in training and will do the same on Saturday and see what happens.

“Everyone knows in this league there is always a chance around the corner you could get beaten, but no matter what happens we try not to let it affect us too much.

“We have got a couple of targets in mind and will just keep going towards that.”

The Ton number five has credited his new centre back partner Efe Ambrose with being a big influence on him already during his short time at the club.

He told the Tele: “Efe has played at the very top and I have been quite lucky during my career to play with quite a lot of guys who have played at a higher level than me, and you always learn from them.

“I have been very lucky to come across certain partners in football and a lot of guys who have played at the top.

“I have enjoyed that and big Efe has been the same, it’s really enjoyable working with him.”
