MORTON have snapped up a piece of ground beside Cappielow as they look at plans to develop it for the benefit of the club.

Ton bosses have obtained a plot off Sinclair Street next to the stadium and revealed that feasibility studies are already under way to examine how it could be utilised.

A club statement said the parcel of land had been taken over from Inverclyde Council.

Fans reacted by welcoming the move and have expressed hope that the ground could house a commercial development such as a bar which could generate matchday and other revenue for the club.

A spokesperson for the Morton board said: “We are delighted to say that the plot of land behind the Cowshed at Sinclair Street has been obtained by the club from Inverclyde Council.

“Feasibility studies are already under way into potentially developing this area.

“We will be making further announcements about that soon.”

Cappielow chiefs have also hailed the impact of the club’s new backers Dalrada Technology, who signed a sponsorship deal for stadium naming rights earlier in the season and are putting a six figure sum into the club, as well as providing expertise to help modernise the running of it.

Ton said: “Off the park, we would like to thank Dalrada for their phenomenal support of the club. We are building a fantastic relationship with Dalrada and look forward to working together with them to keep moving Morton forward both on and off the pitch.”

In other commercial news, Ton officials have confirmed that they are making progress with implementing a long-awaited new ticketing system.

They said: “We are also making progress with our ticketing system, and it is our hope to be in a position to give you an update around plans for introducing this for next season before Christmas.

“Our aim is to significantly improve the experience of buying a ticket and modernise our system.”

The announcements come just over a year after Ton became a communityowned club after 20 years in the hands of the Rae family and their Golden Casket firm.

Fans’ investment group Morton Club Together sealed a takeover deal last September which took control of the stadium and saw the club’s debts wiped out.

MCT - which was set up in 2019 now has almost 1,000 members who between them are pumping over £100,000 into the club each year.

Ton’s victory over Partick last Saturday stretched the club’s unbeaten run to seven matches and they currently sit second in the Championship, with manager Dougie Imrie recently winning the league’s manager of the month prize.

The statement from Morton praised fans and said the club was receiving ‘sensational’ backing from supporters.

It added: “It is hard to believe it is now 14 months since Greenock Morton officially became a community-owned club.

“There is no question it has been a transitional period for the club, but also one of great opportunity.

“The players and management team are doing a fantastic job, and the most pleasing thing to see is just how much everyone is battling and fighting for each other.

“The togetherness around the club right now is special and we hope there will be many more scenes like Saturday to enjoy throughout the rest of the season.

“It’s an exciting time to be a Morton fan right now, and we want to thank you all for your support.”

“Studies are already under way into potentially ” developing the area
