A YOUNG Greenock man has been named NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde apprentice of the year for his ‘exceptional work’ at Inverclyde Royal.

Scott Robb, who is a multiskilled technician with the estates team at the hospital, received the Unison and Unite title at the health board’s annual apprentice graduation, which celebrates the next generation of talent working across the health board.

Scott, 21, admits he couldn’t quite believe it when it was announced that he had won this year’s top award.

He said: “I’m over the moon, it came as a surprise to me but I am absolutely delighted to have won.

“It’s not just an achievement for me but for the whole IRH site too.

“It shows the level of work that is going on and the high standard of training I have been given.

“The support I have received has been incredible, the team couldn’t have been more welcoming and have always encouraged me to get involved and ask questions.

“They have helped to give me more confidence in what I am doing too.”

Scott, who works across both the electrician and engineer teams, says he has learned a great deal in his time at IRH.

He said: “I’m from Greenock and the IRH is my local hospital, so I take great pride in knowing that the work I am doing benefits my community.”

Scott is one of 77 apprentices currently working for the health board, with a further 15 set to join in the coming weeks.

He joined the four year programme straight from school and aims to move on to university when he graduates next year.

Scott said: “I have always had a keen interest and passion for how things work and at one of our career open days at school I got chatting to someone from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who told me about the apprentice programme.

“I’m so pleased I applied and was given a place, as it’s such a great experience.

“When I graduate I would like to go to university to continue with my studies, but I would like to stay at the IRH too as I have loved every minute of it.”

Bosses at the hospital are full of praise for the impression Scott has made.

Ross Campbell, operational estates site manager at IRH, said: “The whole team are so proud of Scott for winning apprentice of the year, it’s a fantastic and hugely deserved award.

“From day one, Scott has shown such passion for this work and an appetite to learn as much as he possibly can.

“We’d like to thank Scott and all of our apprentices for their continued hard work, we are delighted to have them as part of our team.”
