YOUNG GUNS FIRE ONALLCYLINDERS

-

GREENOCK Morton 2s side showed the future’s bright for the club with an impressive home win.

The game was played in the best of spirits and both teams had a good mix of ages, with half the Greenock team between 12 and 16.

The match started well for Greenock, with a full set of youngsters up front. The top of the pitch was Murray Brown, Murray Flynn, Jake McCabe and Finn McCabe.

The ball moved quickly between the players around the D and Greenock found themselves 2-0 up after 12 minutes, with goals from Murray Brown and Ciaran Prabhu.

There was a lot of time spent in the Giffnock D, with multiple shots on and off target, however, the hosts only had two goals to show for it.

Giffnock fought back with an excellently worked goal up to the two ‘lonely’ strikers, with their only shot on target and a goal to show for their effort.

Greenock made a strong start in the second half with some excellent passing from Ciaran Prabhu and George Kelly in the middle, leading to more and more chances in the Giffnock goal area.

Ciaran on the right linked well with his forwards and tackled brilliantly throughout the game, always in space, ready for the pass and drove the ball beautifully into the opposition danger zone.

George - playing on the left in his first game in the club - played a stormer, sometimes with a diving slide to stop a wide ball through and was great in setting up the forwards to create multiple chances.

His first goal came from a strong sweep from the back of the D and hopefully it’s the first of many more to come.

Aiden Canning, Liam Sleith and Alex McKnight who were the ‘wall’ at the back.

Two key defenders were out this match, however, these lads stepped up with great gusto and skill.

The Giffnock forwards and midfield just couldn’t get through the defensive barrier and so the goalie, Hamish Weld-Forester, didn’t even touch the ball in the second half.

Liam, on his first game for the team, made some great running and tackling and Aiden’s excellent manto-man marking kept the opposition at bay.

The final goal came from a Graeme Quigley and Harry Weld-Forester combo in a penalty corner move with a speedy pass to round off the scoring at 4-1.

All the players deserve credit for a fantastic performance, especially Ciaran for winning man of the match.

It’s great hope for the future of Greenock Morton Hockey Club and the development of these future stars.
