Capital gains for Greenock

-

FOLLOWING on from a good win the week before, Greenock were away to ESM 2s in Edinburgh. After a scrappy start the goalscoring was kicked off by the hosts who were awarded a controversial penalty corner that shouldn’t have been given. It was saved by ‘keeper Scott Jones but fell onto the postman’s arm and a penalty flick was awarded and converted to make it 1-0. This spurred them on to rally and get back in the game. The remaining three quarters of the game were filled with many questionable umpiring decisions, both of which were provided by the hosts. Greenock did well in the uphill battle and clinical striker Ben Peterson converted a chance at the top D using his reverse stick to score at the ESM ‘keeper’s near post. The visitors then controlled the majority of the game, easily bypassing ESM’s tired full press. Greenock were awarded in their efforts when they won a penalty corner in the latter half of the game. The corner was drag flicked by Ben Peterson right through the ESM ‘keeper by sheer force, giving Greenock the 2-1 lead. A dominant display in defence from Cameron Purves, Jamie Terris, Fraser Melville, Jonny Slater and Scott Jones in between the posts meant that ESM had no real threat at goal for the entirety of the game. This was a terrific away win for GMHC which the boys absolutely loved. The atmosphere in the changing room after was second to none and capped off a great first half of the season. The men’s 1st XI will be back in action and training in January after a much-deserved winter break. Man of the match went to Jamie ‘JT’ Terris on his first return to the squad this season. An incredible effort and performance within the GMHC defence.
