Inverclyde weightlifters gain Scottish success

-

TWO Inverclyde weightlifters struck gold at the Scottish Masters Cup with a show of strength in Glasgow.

Greenock-based David Owens and Denise Trayling saw off strong competition from across the country at the national competition in Easterhouse.

Denise competed first in the women’s 59kg class.

In the first lift, the snatch, she started at 38kgs, which she achieved easily, before following that up with another successful attempt at 40kg.

Her final attempt at 42kg was easier than her other two lighter attempts.

Denise was very happy with how easy the final attempt was, and in hindsight, thought she maybe should have tried more.

In the clean and jerk lift she started at 55kg, which she made with no problem, then increased to 57kg and got this again with ease. However, she lost concentration with her final attempt at 59kg and failed the lift. Denise’s total of 99 kilos got her the gold medal in her class.

David had a bad cold for the two weeks leading to the competition, so he wasn’t up to his best.

He competed in the men’s 89kg class was up against close competition from Andrew Macintyre of Crossfit Glasgow Spartans.

In the snatch lift, Andrew started with a good attempt at 76kg before following that with a successful one at 79kg.

Andrew then made 79kg, equalling David’s lift, but failed at his final attempt at 82kg.

David then attempted 84kg twice which would have broken his Scottish record of 83kg but failed both attempts.

This put both Andrew and David level at the halfway stage.

In the clean and jerk Andrew started at 96kg, which he completed successfully.

David followed with 100kg on his first attempt which gave him the lead.

Andrew increased to 101kg which he made but failed at his final attempt of 103kg.

With Andrew being successful with 101, this gave him the lead by 1kg.

David attempted 105ks for his second lift which would give him the win but failed with a slight press out on the jerk as he rushed the lift.

David took his time a bit more on my final attempt and made the lift successfully which gave him the win and the gold medal by 4kg with a total of 184kgs.

Both Denise and David are now training for the British Masters Championships in Wales which will be held in early 2023.
