A CRACKING DAY OUT

-

INVERCLYDE AC’s Annual Easter Race and Egg Hunt took place on Saturday morning at Ravenscraig Stadium.

The sunny weather brought the welcome attendance of club mascot Zoomin’ Zebra to support and encourage all the young participants in both events.

The Easter Race takes the form of a chase, with all age groups participating at the same time over different distances and with different starts around the track, and the chase is on when the whistle signals to go.

The Minis raced over 600 metres and were first to finish after one-and-a-half laps, led by Danny McGonigle, then came a mixture of U11s who competed over three laps and the older juniors ranging from U13s to U17s, who completed 1500 metres.

All participants received a medal and gold, silver and bronze gongs went to the top three finishers in each age group.

Before the Egg Hunt, some of the more enthusiastic athletes challenged Zoomin’ Zebra to what has become a regular addition to club events - a race across the football pitch - only this time they ‘forgot’ to say that it was a race to the halfway line and back, leaving ZZ looking puzzled and certainly not the winner this time.

Four teams contested the egg hunt and certificates were presented to the winning team, with all teams receiving chocolate eggs.

All athletes and spectators then enjoyed hot chocolate and Easter cookies provided by the catering team of the day - Morven Callan,

Jan Gaffney, Pamela JamiesonSmith, with special thanks to Lynne and Cora Owens for the home baking, and to all who provided the goodies.

Club coaches and volunteers who organised and ran the event were Rhona Bushfield, Alan Callan, Kay Cooke, Faye Currie, Gerry Gaffney, Janice Hendrie, David Holmes, Elaine Kirkwood, Kim Law, Jane Lyne, Hannah McGeehan, Phillip McGeehan, Lyne Owens, Jen Pringle and, last but not least, Zoomin’ Zebra.

The club also thanks Callum and David from Inverclyde Leisure for their assistance on the day and to the parents and families for their encouraging support to all the young athletes.
