Anglers reel in prizes in trout competition

-

THE Newark Angling Club held their latest outing recently when 25 members made the journey to Loch Lubnaig, near Callander.

They were competing in the first leg of the Hugh Coyle Trophy, for the angler who returns the heaviest brown trout over three visits to the loch.

The Lyle Flynn Pairs one-day trophy was competed for on the day and was won by Neil McDowell and George Martin.

Neil returned his full eight-fish bag limit and George, fishing the Strathyre end of the loch, returned six to lift the silverware.

The loch was very high, and successful fishing on the maggot saw members return a total of 30 wild brown trout between them.

Davy McDonald (Sr) along with Ray Hichision had two returns and Ray landed the heaviest trout of the outing at just under the pound mark.

Stefan Flynn, fishing the ‘Tasmanian Devil’ returned two nice fish, and Henry Harrison along with Ian Ross, fishing the maggot, landed one and Ian two.

Anglers fishing the Strathyre end saw two returns for Stevie Leitch and Davy McDonald (Jr) on the maggot.

Patrick Dunn along with John Miller and Billy Matthews got on the points board by returning one Lubnaig trout each.

Hard luck story of the day went to Patrick Dunn who lost a good fish at the net.

Brian Trainner, fishing his favourite mark on the fly returned a brace of fish.

Junior member Calum McDonald enjoyed his day on the Lubnaig returning three nice trout for top place among the juniors.

Results - 1st, Neil McDowell (8 for) 4lbs 3ozs; 2nd George Martin(6 for) 3lbs 7ozs; 3rd, Ray Hichision (2 for) 1lbs 6ozs; 4th, Brian Trainner (2 for) 1lbs 4ozs
