Greenock looking to finish season on high
GREENOCK round off the season with a trip to Moor Park, Lanark, to play the Champions elect of WOSFL 3.
The home side can still be caught by Lesmahagow, however, having played the same number of games and holding a seven point lead over their South Lanarkshire rivals, they look a fairly safe bet to take the title.
That is of no concern to the Nock who will be aiming to finish with a win.
The previous encounter at Ravenscraig ended with Lanark winning 4-2, although that does not tell the full story.
Greenock were 1-0 up and looking very comfortable before losing two goals through a very cheap penalty and some careless defending.
They also spurned some glorious chances in the second half to turn the match around.
In truth, it was rather frustrating performance.
The team go into tomorrow’s match in good heart. An excellent 2-1 win away to relegation threatened Ardeer on Wednesday was a clear indication that the team is not just seeing the season out.
Against the very physical Stevenston based team the Nock weathered an early storm of long balls to take control the game and play some excellent passing football in securing all three points.
The game also highlighted the benefits of the Greenock pathway system.
Pat Tonner, who is a central defender for the Under 18s stepped up to the senior team and delivered a superb performance both in defence and in his calm use of the ball in building attacks up from the back.
Tai Beckley, who for some time has been an established first team regular, Cammy Barclay and Zak Crombie, all from the Under 20s development squad featured in the game.
Two other members of Wednesday’s squad, Nathan Lightfoot and Travis Stracey, have played for the development squad this year.
Lanark have been very consistent, particularly in the second half of the season and their position at the top of the league is entirely deserved. They are a well organised efficient outfit.
But if Gary Fleming’s men can reproduce the same level of resilient, intelligent defending and creative attacking football seen against Ardeer, on what should be a better surface, they just might cause The Yowes to stumble en-route to the championship.
