Small business that thinks big gets nominated for top award

INDEPENDENT COFFEE SHOP UP FOR BEST HIGH STREET BUSINESS

- By ABBY RUSTON

AN independent coffee shop in the heart of Grimsby hopes to smell the coffee after being nominated for a prestigious award that recognises small businesses. Riverhead Coffee has been nominated for the High Street Hero for best high street business at The Small Awards; an awards programme for UK small businesses, now in its third year. Launched in 2017 and sponsored by Indeed and TSB, it focuses on recognising businesses often overlooked by other awards, rewarding for growth, creativity and commitment to their local communities.

From bricks and mortar retailers to innovation-led start-ups, social enterprise champions to supply line legends - businesses from across all sectors have a chance at this year’s ceremony, including Riverhead Coffee, founded in 2015 by Nic Till.

Nic said: “I’m so excited to be in the shortlist for this award!

“It is the first time we have entered anything like this. It is great for small businesses to be recognised for their hard work and in particular for supporting and encouraging community relationships which is really at the heart of what we’re trying to do at Riverhead Coffee.”

The popular independent coffee shop has double celebrations, as this month also marks their fourth anniversary at their Victoria Street location. The venue is going from strength to strength despite the difficult retail climate. Riverhead Coffee has two locations, one on Victoria Street, Grimsby and the other on St Peter’s Avenue, Cleethorpes.

The family friendly venue is popular with all ages due to its warm welcoming environment and inclusivity. They cater for different dietary needs including vegan and gluten-free, yet still keeping traditional café food favourites such as tea-cakes and their “soon to be famous bacon sarnies”.

They also host events such as parent and baby groups, poetry cafes, art and photography exhibitions along with live music. Michelle Ovens, founder of The Small Awards, said: “The Small Awards celebrates the huge contribution that the UK’s 5.6 million small businesses make to the economy and broader society across the country.

“There are huge numbers of small businesses doing great things, making great products and excelling in customer service, and they all deserve recognition.

“I am proud that there is now a spotlight on vibrant, dynamic and exciting UK businesses such as Riverhead Coffee.”

Winners of The Small Awards will be crowned at an event at Marylebone’s historic St Mary’s church, London.

There are eleven categories, all highlighting the vibrancy of the UK’s small business sector which turns over £1.9 trillion each year.
