THE war on the plague of drugs blighting neighbourhoods in North East Lincolnshire will be relentless vowed police at the start of a series of raids. Officers broke down the door to a home in Park Street, Cleethorpes yesterday morning and discovered a cannabis growing set up.

The police raid was welcomed by residents.

Officers seized several bags of cannabis and removed around 20 plants from an upstairs room of the unoccupied premises.

Sergeant Dan Healey of Humberside Police said the raid is one of a series of warrants to be executed to stamp out the drugs menace.

He said officers are investigating a number of lines of enquiry, although no arrests have yet been made.

“It is unfair on the people who live nearby. It affects them and their standard of living. So we are going to be doing more of this in future,” said the sergeant.

He confirmed around 20 plants were found in the raid.

“It is quite a sophisticated set up and clearly had the aim of getting larger,” the top officer said.

He was pleased to have been supported by a number of officers including a Chief Inspector from the Special Constabulary of Humberside Police.

He added: “Cannabis is still illegal even though a lot is said about medicinal purposes. But its impact can be detrimental. It is the neighbours who suffer the consequences.”

One neighbour said: “We are all extremely pleased to see the police acting in this way. But when they sorted out the East Marsh it pushed a lot of the problems over here. Now they are sorting it out here it will probably move back to the East Marsh. It is really good what the police are doing. I just wish there were more of them.”

Another resident said: “It is really good what they are doing. I work in mental health and see the consequences of what drugs do. We have a beautiful neighbourhood here and growing cannabis pulls the street down. I say good on the police and we are dead pleased to see them.

“It is getting better down Park Street. We have really nice neighbours. But the problem is down to landlords letting in people who use drugs.

“We know the police officers’ hands are tied by the protocols and senior officers. But they are doing a good job.” A resident who moved into Park Street in January said: “It is good they are responding.

“It would be nice to see more of this action.

“There are other houses being used like this.”
