Do you know an Inspiring Youngster?

- By ABBY RUSTON

THIS week we are asking members of the public to nominate an Inspiring Youngster for an award, as part of this year’s Heart of Your Community awards.

So far we have showcased the Emergency Services and Mental Health and Wellbeing, Young Sports Star, and the Friend/Neighbour of the year categories.

The awards recognise the upstanding members of our community who make the area a better place to live and work.

The Inspiring Youngster award sponsored by Franklin College -will go to a role model, aged 16 or under, who deserves special recognition. This could be someone who has made a contribution to their community, taken steps to support important causes or fundraising for charities. These young people are the future – they are building their confidence and resilience, and are already working hard to be the change in creating a better world.

Last year the award went to 12 year old Corey Allenby who has the condition called retinitis pigmentosam; which is causing him to lose his eyesight.

Instead of dwelling on his condition he created a social media page to help other children around the world to cope with the condition. He organised a charity event in aid of Guide Dogs For The Blind to give something back to the charity who helped him.

Franklin Deputy Principal, Sue Wallis said of sponsoring the award for the 3rd year: “Franklin College is and always has been proud to be part of our local community.

“At Franklin we feel strongly that the young people from our community already play an important role in its future.

“In fact they are our future. Through their commitment, skills and talent young people in our community amaze us every day. “Franklin are sponsoring the HOYC – Inspiring Youngster for the third year because it is important to celebrate our young people’s incredible participation in and contributions to that community. They make us proud!”

Franklin College Principal Peter Kennedy said: “At North East Lincolnshire’s only sixth Form College, we take great pride in the reputation we have established as specialists in sixth form education.

“Our aim is to enable every student to achieve more than they thought possible. We recognise that all students have different needs and this is why our teachers and student support teams are skilled in enabling you to achieve your full potential.

“In fact, we have a national reputation for our independent learning programmes. “We also offer a wide range of academic and vocational courses in the region with our Study Programmes including enrichment and other opportunities to really support growth into adulthood.

“This includes our sector-leading Career Ready Programme known as Franklin Professionals, as well as programmes in Sport, Medicine and Art & Culture.

“We also offer extensive volunteering opportunities and we are home to a fantastic High Flyers Programme. Our extensive links with local and national employers have also resulted in students being very successful when progressing on from Franklin College.

“We want students to enjoy their time here at Franklin, gaining a range of skills and qualifications and growing as rounded young people ready for their next step. This said, the purpose of Franklin College is a bridge to your future, whatever that future may be.

“The great strength of Sixth Form Colleges like Franklin is our expertise in forming this bridge to the future.

“Our staff are experts in this phase of education, our teachers are subject specialists able to focus on the academic and life skills needed to make progress to employment or University, and our support and tutor staff are specialists in working with the 16-19 year old age group. “The range of destinations to which Franklin students’ progress is wide and includes Careers, Higher Education and Apprenticeship routes across the country and sometimes internationally.

“We are so proud that Franklin students go on to change their world!” The awards provide an excellent opportunity for local companies to partner with the Grimsby Telegraph and GrimsbyLive to celebrate the people in our local community.

This year, awards will be presented across 12 categories, with an overall winner determined by a panel of judges. GrimsbyLive will be featuring a different category every week.

The aim is to celebrate individuals or community groups who have done extraordinary things – whether that’s caring for others, raising huge sums for charity or simply making a real difference to their communities. Other winners have faced adversity or illness with great courage from all ages and walks of life. Nominations can be made in the award categories for Emergency Services , Friend/Neighbour of the Year, Inspiring Youngster, Community Project of the Year, Young Sports Star , Local Hero, Child of Courage, Mental Health and Wellbeing , Charity Champion, Community Sports, Carer of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
