Part of A18 to close for second phase of works

- By MARK PAGE mark.page@reachplc.com @markwpage

PART of the A18 will be closed for more than a day as the next stage of roadworks begins more than a month earlier than originally planned.

Phase two of road safety improvements will take place on a section of the carriageway known as Waterdell, between the Waltham Road and Ashby Hill junctions.

A full closure will be in place on this stretch from 7pm on Monday, June 15, until works are completed on Wednesday, June 17, with the road set to reopen from 6am. Work was initially scheduled to begin on this section on July 27 but is starting sooner due to the early completion of the first phase.

The improvements, which will include carriageway resurfacing, were also planned to take two weeks to complete, with daytime closures in place.

However, following discussions between North East Lincolnshire Council, Engie and contractor CR Reynolds, it was agreed the works would be carried out with one continuous closure in place for a shorter period of time.

The authority hopes this will “provide a number of benefits to the project and reduce the disruption to businesses and nearby residents using this key route”. Advanced warning signs will be installed on site and a signed diversion route will be in place. Emergency and resident access will be maintained at all times during the works.

As advised during phase one, HGV traffic is encouraged to not use the A18 when road closures are in operation and is instead urged to use a signed alternate A16 diversion route.

Following completion of the carriageway resurfacing, further works will take place six to eight weeks later to apply a high-friction surface. Further details will be announced when the works programme is confirmed.

The second phase of works on the A18 follows a full closure of the road between the A46 roundabout and the Beelsby junction lasting four months between January and May.

This work was expected to continue until July but was completed nine weeks early. It saw part of the carriageway widened as well as the introduction of right-turn lanes at the Oaklands Hall Hotel and Laceby Manor Golf Club, in addition to the installation of vehicle safety barriers and full resurfacing and lining works.

The £2.8m road safety improvement scheme is being carried out in four phases with it due to be completed by May 2021.
