Dexter needs surgery - and a forever home

PUPPY A ‘SWEET LITTLE CHARACTER’

- By PAIGE FRESHWATER

MEET Dexter – a seven-monthold puppy who cannot be rehomed until he has had surgery. Dexter, a German Wirehaired Pointer, is undergoing corrective surgery on his eyes next week.

This ‘sweet little character’ is currently staying at Jerry Green Dog Rescue – but cannot wait to meet his forever family once he has made a full recovery. Unlike humans, dogs have three eyelids rather than two – and their third tear gland can become swollen and red.

This is called ‘cherry eye’ as it creates a small pink bulge which covers part of the eye.

The Blue Cross says ‘cherry eye’ commonly protrudes from the corner of the eye nearest the nose. They said: “Cherry eye is a common condition inherited in certain breeds of dog, and in rare cases, it can arise in cats. “Although unsightly, cherry eye doesn’t normally cause any discomfort to dogs or cats unless it is left untreated and complications occur.”

Thankfully, your donations to Jerry Green Dog Rescue means Dexter can undergo surgery on June 10.

A Jerry Green Dog Rescue spokesperson said: “Thank you. Once again we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our wonderful supporters, especially at this difficult time for everyone.

“We could not do what we do without you – thank you so much. “Dexter is scheduled to have his surgery on June 10 and we will keep you all up to date with how he gets on.”

Young Dexter’s surgery is estimated to cost between £400 and £700, including medication and aftercare.

The Jerry Green Dog Rescue spokesperson added: “Beautiful dogs like Dexter, with the sweetest little character, are still arriving into our centres.

“We are expecting a huge influx of dogs over the coming months, as the far reaching and devastating effects of the coronavirus outbreak start to emerge.

“As you can see, though Dexter is a stunning boy, it is immediately apparent that he will need expensive surgery before he can even begin his rehoming journey. “Though his condition is not life-threatening, at just sevenmonths-old we cannot stand by and risk lifelong effects on this young pup’s vision and health by not immediately seeking him the best veterinary care we can. “We do this for Dexter, and all the dogs who need us, because we must, because it is who we are and who we will continue to be for as long as we can.

“We can’t be there for dogs like Dexter, of which there are many, without the support of people like you.”
