A SURVIVOR of an horrific crash has thanked rescuers for keeping him alive and the first on the scene luckily just happened to be an accident and emergency consultant doctor.

Daniel Bestwick suffered serious injuries in the crash at Stallingborough 11 days ago when the car he was driving left the road in pitch black around 1am.

From his hospital bed he told how grateful he was to Dr Daniel Proctor, who works as a consultant on the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital accident and emergency ward.

He was off-duty and travelling on the road when he suddenly saw the wreckage of the car in a field in the darkness. “What are the chances of an off-duty A&E consultant going past just after a crash? It was pitch dark. It is a quiet road and I ended up in a field off the road. And if there is one person you need in such a situation it’s an A&E doctor and there he was. “Someone was looking over me that day. I could have been there for hours. Anyone else might have tried to move me. But the doctor kept me still and I just want to thank him,” said Daniel, 39, from Immingham.

Daniel’s family have sent a card and flowers to the doctor to thank him for his emergency response. Daniel, who is recovering at Hull Royal Infirmary, told the Grimsby Telegraph: “My family have thanked him and he just said he was only doing what any normal person would do. But what he did was brilliant and I cannot thank him enough. I want to walk up to him and thank him when I am better. “But at the moment I have a broken shoulder and pelvis and my lower back is fractured. I will recover and already I am able to stand up with some help. It will take a few months to get properly able to walk but I am on the road and in high spirits, thanks to the doctor and everyone else who responded.” Daniel, who works at a pizza shop in the Grimsby area, only has a vague recollection of what happened when the Honda Civic he was driving left Riby Road in the single-vehicle collision at around 1pm on Friday, August 21. Tools that were in the boot of the car shot through and shattered the windscreen due to the impact of the car rolling over. Emergency services were on the scene minutes after the crash around 1pm. But Daniel’s family did not get to know about the crash until a few hours later.

Daniel also thanked his family for looking after him and bring items to the hospital in Hull. He said he hopes to be “repatriated” to hospital in Grimsby soon.

He said: “I can’t wait to get back on my own feet and back to supporting my mum and nephew James and the rest of the family. We missed out on our holiday to Skegness, so we will try to organise something later. But first I want to thank the doctor.”
